Unclaimed Scholarships

Each year millions of dollars in scholarship awards go unclaimed. There are many reasons for this, but the most common is that students just did not know they existed.  Another common reason is students feeling intimidated by the personal essay requirement.  In this article, I will give you an action plan to follow that will help you complete your scholarship application and I will give you valuable insight into writing a personal essay, so that unclaimed scholarships can be a thing of the past.  The Heyls Scholarship, which gives four-year scholarships to Kalamazoo colleges had 8 unclaimed scholarships last year at a value of $150,000 each.  Many of you are thinking how can I get my hands on a portion of the unclaimed scholarships out there? I hope that this article will answer your questions.

Here is an action plan that all students hoping to receive  college scholarships can follow.  Step one, is to do a self-inventory in which you ask yourself these questions,:Am I a member of  an underrepresented group? Am I interested in a specific and or unique field of study?  Step two, is providing detailed information about any talent or special interest you possess that would set you apart from other applicants applying for the same unclaimed scholarships.  I suggest you  provide video of yourself exhibiting your talent. You will need to provide a link to the video with your application, this will certainly propel your application to the top of the pack.

Weird Scholarships

Weird Scholarships

I was not aware that there was a category for scholarships that could be labeled as wacky until I started trying to find unusual ways to creatively fund my college education. As a matter of fact, I still don’t think many people know about this classification since so many weird scholarships go unclaimed each year. I would like to get the word out about these unusual ways to get free money for school so that more students can benefit from it.

So what are wacky scholarships? Although this term is nowhere to be found in the Webster dictionary, the accepted definition from collective sources on the internet seems to go something like this: free money for school that is obtained based upon unique or odd personal characteristics, strange or weird hobbies or interests, or unique talents or skills.

So now you are probably wanting some specific examples. Let me give you some wacky scholarships that I found to be extremely unusual and even weird in my search. I could not believe that someone could get free money for school for some of these things.

Unique or odd personal characteristics. Are you left-handed? Do you have natural red hair? Do you have a twin or triplet? Are you a vegetarian? Are you really short, or are you really tall? Yes, believe it or not, there are wacky scholarships for all of these things.

Strange or weird hobbies or interests. Do you like to skateboard? Are you into knitting? What about bowling? Are you good at writing essays?

Unique talents or skills. Are you good at art design? Can you write poetry? How well do you play poker? And here’s my personal favorite: How creative are you with duct tape?

These are just some of the topics I remember seeing in my search for free money for college. I’m sure there were many more. I hope this article will help to spread the word about weird scholarships and help you to get some free money for school for who you already are, something you already do, and things you enjoy.

Unusual College Scholarships

College is expensive, but there are way to keep the cost down. You can get financial aid that is need based, but what about those students who do not qualify? Loan money is available, but who wants to come out of college in debt already? Low competition, unknown, and unclaimed scholarships are the answer.

There are unusual scholarships for just about anything you can think of. Many of these awards are very weird. For example, did you know that there is a wacky scholarship available to students who skateboard, and another odd scholarship for those who like to knit?

There is another entire group of unusual scholarships based on personal characteristics. Can you believe that certain colleges and organizations offer awards for being left handed, red headed, short, tall, and having an odd last name?

I’ve just mentioned a few of the many unusual scholarships that are out there. The key to getting them is in knowing how to apply and where to find the information. Many of these strange scholarships are not advertised well, so the majority of students do not know that they even exist. For this reason, many of these unusual scholarships have very low competition and some even go unclaimed each year.

So how do you find and apply for these unusual scholarships? You have to look for them. They are out there for those who search hard enough for them. The cost of college is continually on the rise. It is well worth the effort to try finding free money for school.

Graduate School Scholarships

Graduate School Scholarships

A good education has a high price and yearly increases in the cost of living makes attending a good graduate school quite expensive. One of the most important factors people consider while applying to a graduate school is the cost involved. Student loans and scholarships are the two options open to students to help them overcome this financial hurdle. The amount of scholarships offered in the U.S. is astounding. There are several scholarships easily available but the criteria may differ from university to university.

Every school has a financial aid center that helps students with information about available scholarships. All options should be explored. Parents, friends, teachers, and the Internet all are possible sources that should be tapped for information regarding funding.

The U.S. government helps in its own way. FAFSA, which stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid is one such government aid. While granting funding to a student FAFSA takes into account students’ parents’ earnings. Amounts are fixed on this basis. A point to be noted here is that grants need not be paid back, but loans do.

There is a lot of money available in scholarships; all you need is a lot of extensive research and hard work to find out about them and apply. There is over $129 billion available in financial aids. A financial advisor can help you filling out forms for various grants. One just needs to start working on the research early.

The National Scholarship Providers Association (NSPA) has been set up with a view to enhancing the reach and availability of scholarship to deserving students. This association functions as a forum for the exchange of best practices and policy information among scholarship providers. Set up in 1999, the NSPA now has 150 organizational members. It also boasts of several individual members. Several small and large private foundations, public charities, some universities and colleges are among the members of the NSPA. The NSPA membership’s scholarship awards account for over $450,000,000 in scholarships to more than 200,000 students each year.

Short People Scholarships

Short People Scholarships

Heading off to college and looking for a student grant is a serious business but there are some scholarships out there that, although they may seem stupid, are worth a lot of money.

Among the millions of possible college grants are some that most people wouldn’t imagine exist. There is a duct tape scholarship. Just wear nothing but duct tape to your high school prom and you are in with a chance. Then there are the lefties. Students who write with their left hand are eligible for a special left handed college grant.

Tall people can claim a scholarship if they are over 6′11″ for men or 5′10″ for women. Not to be out done, there is also a short people’s college grant.

If you are thinking of studying languages or linguistics then you may be able to claim $500 from The Klingon Language Institute. It really exists and the good news is you don’t even have to be fluent in speaking Klingon. There is more for Star Trek fans. There are scholarships for would be writers and even a medical one from the Star fleet Academy although I do not believe there is one for having long pointed ears.

Baking cakes, apple pie or being able to call ducks all carry valuable college grants. You can get free education at Texas A&M University if your surname is Scarpinato. If you like shooting things and read up on the Bill of Rights, the National Rifle Association may pay for your education.

There are lots of crazy scholarships available. Some are just stupid or funny but the fact is that they pay out cash which can be very helpful in helping you with your college fees.

The vast majority of the millions of scholarships that are available are more down to earth and there really are millions of them worth millions of dollars every year. If you are heading off to college and even if you think you have looked into all the possible sources of college grants you may be surprised at how many more are available.
